Test drive: 2014 Audi A3 Sportsedan 1.4 TFSI

The Sportsedan is a whole new thing in the Audi line-up, and with it the A3 family complete.

The new Audi A3 Sportsedan is the biggest A3 model ever. It is 15 cm longer than the Sportback, and it even has 45 liters more luggage space. That makes it feel very spacious, and you get the feeling of sitting in a much larger car. Sitting in the front you have lots of space with an suitable distance to the passenger beside you. In the back seats there is good enough space for two adults, but it gets tight if you try to push one more person inside.

When you get inside the A3 Sportsedan everything seems familiar in a known Audi style. The interior looks nice and is ergonomic. In the middle of the center console there is an 11 mm screen which comes out when you start the car. There you can adjust the car settings, navigation and much more by using the control wheel located by the gear lever.

The design of the A3 Sportsedan is stylish and easy to like which is not granted on small sedans. They can often become bulky due to their short length, but Audi has managed the task well by giving it a lower roof line and some more cm in length. Our test car is equipped with the S-line package which makes the car appear more sporty and luxurious. This package gives you other bumpers and skirts. LED lights both in front and the rear makes the car look even better.

The A3 Sportsedan is a fun car to drive. It is both sporty and comfortable. With the S-line suspension the car is a bit more stiffen than on regular suspensions, but it is still comfortable. The car has a good balance and you can feel that it takes curves really well. Our test car has the Ambition equipment level and has therefor the Audi drive select as standard. From there you can adjust the response of the sensitivity of the gas pedal, how the steering should feel like and how you want the S-tronic to work.

With the downsizing period that we are in now the engines become smaller in volume. But by adding a turbo you can achieve an acceptable amount of horsepower. Our car has the 1.4 TFSI engine with 140 hp. It has COD (Cylinder on demand) which cuts two of the four cylinders seamlessly when they are not needed. By doing so the car uses a lot less fuel which means that it is cheaper to buy and own. With 140 hp the engine is strong enough to please most people in daily driving. The S-tronic is very fast and comfortable. By adjusting it in the drive select you can make it perfect for your use. You also get gear paddles behind the steering wheel if you like to gear manually and dream a little about being a racing driver.

There is a ton of extra equipment to the A3 Sportsedan. Some of the equipment in our car is advanced key, progressive steering, panorama sunroof, tyre pressure control, assistance package, technic package, light package and some more. It has also a Bang & Olufsen sound system which is some of the best I´ve ever heard in a car within this price range. It plays really well with a clear sound and a powerful bass.

The price starts at 335 700 NOK, which isn´t quite bad for a small premium car. Add a little extra equipment and you will land on around 440 000 NOK for a car I think you can become really happy with.

A big thank you to Erik Arnesen Bryn AS for renting the car out to us. Now, lets enjoy some beautiful scenery of Oslo and the A3 Sportsedan.
